Remnants of War – The Führerbunker

“What’s so special about this boring car park in the middle of Berlin?” I hear you say…

Well, this inconspicuous car park is where the Führerbunker was located, of course. And yes it is VERY tempting to bask in the Schadenfreude of seeing Hitler’s resting place being paved over by a car park (don’t forget the added bonus of a bubble tea shop a stone’s throw away as well).

On the other hand, not having a museum or exhibition telling people about the historical importance of what was located here also seems like a missed opportunity.

Unsurprisingly, the German government wants to avoid this spot becoming a shrine, so there’s no desire to put any real effort into advertising the historicity of the place (other than putting up an info board with an extremely broad overview of what the bunker was). – Even this info board was only installed in 2006!

That said, there were walking groups and bike tours rolling up every few minutes to take photos anyway. So, despite the lack of any razzmatazz here, this is surely still the most-photographed car park in Germany.
