Another fantastic day out ‘walking the ground’ near Halbe…and look what you can find when you go walking through the woods!
The most amazing thing about the items we found was that most of them were just lying on the forest floor, dropped 80 years ago by the German 9th Army and German refugees as they fled the oncoming Red Army.
Some of the items we found included jerry cans, belt buckles, a Wehrmacht-issue spade, potentially a spark plug…and much much more.
Rather grimly, we came across an abandoned shoe, and to match that with the hair comb we found last time, you start to get an impression of the awful time refugees must have had, sheltering from the fighting or running for their lives.
History isn’t just found in history books!
