Traces of War – Battle Damage in Brixham, Devon

This is my great-grandmother’s house in Brixham, which nearly suffered a direct hit from a Luftwaffe bomb during the blitz.

Whilst the bomb did “only” land in the bottom of the garden, the shock wave was strong enough to leave several big cracks in the side of the house (now painted over but still just-about visible), and it caused the house to subside on one side which still hasn’t been fixed to this day.

Funnily enough, the day after I took this photo, I met a local historian in the street who said that Canadians were billeted only a stone’s throw away from where the bomb landed and that dozens of torpedos were being stored in their barracks. – If the bomb had hit those torpedos, then half of Brixham would’ve been blown up.
