Remnants of War – My Grandad and the 9th Gurka Rifles

This one’s for you, Grandad.

My Grandad served in the 9th Gurkha Rifles during the Second World War, where, amongst other things, he took part in the 2nd Chindit operation in Burma. After the war, he and his regiment spent two years policing in Malaya before eventually being transferred back to India to oversee partition.

Nowadays, the 9th Rifles is a Gurkha regiment of the Indian army, but it was still poignant to see this memorial honouring the sacrifice made by all Gurkhas throughout history on behalf of Britain.
