Remnants of War – Hochbunker Pallasstraße

The Hochbunker on Pallasstraße in Berlin is a 4-storey high bunker, which was built by Soviet prisoners of war and forced labourers between 1943-1945.

The bunker is located opposite the grounds of the former Sport Palast, and the bunker was intended to provide refuge to party dignitaries if an air raid took place during a rally or speech at the Palast.

Due to its *epic* size and formidable foundations, the bunker survived numerous air raids during the latter stages of the war, along with the Battle of Berlin itself.

After the war, US occupation forces tried to blow the bunker up numerous times, without success.

Eventually, the authorities decided to live with the fact that the bunker couldn’t be removed, so they chose to simply build a block of flats around the bunker instead…
